"Child-Focused MRI" by Shreyas Vasanawala (BS '94)

About our Speaker

Shreyas will give an overview of challenges and new approaches to medical imaging, with a focus on innovations particularly applicable to MRI for children.

Shreyas, Professor of Radiology and Director of MRI at Stanford, received his undergraduate education at Caltech, where he studied mathematics and received the H.J. Ryser scholarship, awarded to the top two undergraduates for mathematical ability.

Then he obtained his MD and PhD in biophysics at Stanford, where his studies led to a resurgence of signal efficient methods in MRI. After training in radiology, and obtaining sub-specialized expertise in pediatric radiology, Shreyas joined Stanford’s faculty.

Currently, he leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on developing fast and quantitative medical imaging methods. The group’s efforts include development of new medical imaging hardware, new pediatric friendly image acquisition methods, novel image reconstruction approaches, and unique strategies to image analysis. 

Their endeavors have led to the 1^st routine clinical translational deployment of high density pediatric specific MRI receiver coils, the 1^st routine pediatric introductions of three novel contrast agents, the 1^st routine clinical use of innovative compressive sensing and deep learning medical imaging methods, and the routine ability to obtain very high resolution pediatric images with much less anesthesia. Together, these efforts have resulted in Lucile Packard Children's Hospital becoming the leading pediatric MRI program internationally.

At Stanford, he serves as Director of MRI and Division Chief of Body MRI. Further, as a Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellow, Shreyas has made marked impacts well beyond Stanford and the academia. His developments are now employed worldwide via his founding of a leading medical imaging AI company, Arterys.
